The smoke chamber is the funnel-shaped space just above the damper, one of the most overlooked parts of a chimney and key to safe draft. We cleared out years of creosote and crumbling mortar, then parged the walls smooth so smoke rises cleanly up the flue.
The smoke chamber serves as the critical transition zone where smoke funnels from the wide fireplace opening into the narrow chimney flue. On older New England chimneys, it is typically built from corbeled brick with stepped ledges and uneven mortar, creating dangerous gaps and rough surfaces where structural and draft trouble begins. Over time, intense heat cycling and moisture cause this original mortar to crumble and decay, allowing highly flammable creosote to settle heavily onto the rough brickwork. This uneven texture disrupts and slows the chimney’s natural draft, pulling smoke, carbon monoxide, and harmful combustion gases back into your living room instead of drawing them cleanly outside.
Left unaddressed, a deteriorated smoke chamber becomes a major performance problem and a severe fire hazard for your property. Open mortar joints allow extreme heat to migrate directly toward the dry wood framing surrounding the chimney structure, which is one of the most frequent reasons classic homes fail Level 2 safety inspections and code compliance. To restore total safety and efficiency, we perform professional smoke chamber parging. By applying a smooth, high-temperature refractory mortar over the exposed brick, we seal all dangerous cracks and create a perfectly smooth funnel that optimizes draft performance, reduces creosote buildup, and protects your home for years to come.
We start by cleaning the chamber thoroughly, removing loose mortar, soot, and any failed parge coat down to sound masonry. Then we apply a refractory (heat-rated) parging mortar over the corbeled brick, filling every gap and building the walls up to a smooth, continuous surface that follows the correct funnel shape toward the flue.
A smooth smoke chamber does three things: it improves draft so the fireplace pulls properly, it gives creosote far less surface to cling to, and it seals the joints so heat and gases stay inside the chimney. All parging is done by hand and worked tight against the masonry so it bonds and lasts.
The finished smoke chamber has clean, smooth walls with no open joints – smoke is guided straight up into the flue, the fireplace drafts the way it should, and future cleanings are faster and safer.
